What is water extraction?
Water extraction is the mechanical removal of standing water from a structure using truck-mounted extractors, submersible pumps, and weighted extraction tools designed for carpet and porous flooring. It is the first mitigation step after any significant water intrusion event — not the only step. Extraction removes bulk liquid water. It does not remove moisture from within materials: drywall, subfloor, framing, insulation, and carpet padding all retain absorbed water after extraction is complete. That retained moisture is addressed in the drying phase using air movers and commercial dehumidifiers. The water category matters: Category 1 is clean supply-line water, Category 2 is gray water from appliance discharge or rain intrusion, and Category 3 is black water from sewage or floodwater. Signs you need professional water extraction now

What's the difference between water extraction and water dry-out?
Extraction removes standing liquid water using pumps and vacuum equipment. Dry-out removes moisture that has absorbed into materials — drywall, framing, subfloor, carpet padding — using air movers and dehumidifiers over several days. You need both. Skipping extraction and going straight to air movers is ineffective; skipping dry-out after extraction leaves absorbed moisture in the structure.
Can I use a shop vac or rent a carpet cleaner instead of calling a professional?
Consumer equipment lacks the airflow and vacuum lift of truck-mounted extraction systems. A shop vac can remove surface water from hard floors; it cannot extract absorbed water from carpet padding or pull moisture from a subfloor. For anything beyond a very small spill, professional extraction is the cost-effective choice — improper extraction leads to mold and structural damage that cost significantly more to remediate.
Does water category affect how extraction is done?
Yes. Category 1 (clean water from a supply line) allows technicians to work in standard conditions and often permits porous materials to be dried in place.
